It's his attempts to tidy up my computer that will one day be the death of him!

The photos are still there. Deleting them on the drive just flags them as being allowed to be overwritten. Go find a computer shop and tell them you want to recover lost/deleted files and they ought to be able to recover most if not all of them for you.
If it was on an SD card in the camera, then swap out SD cards immediately and take the card in for recovery.
