Note to Margaret!

Here's the quote I mentioned on the phone: it comes from 1753 from a book on scurvy written by Scottish naval surgeon Lind:


"Theories are invented according to the whim of each author and the philosophies currently in fashion ... the ignorance of these writers lying concealed under a veil of unmeaning and unintelligible jargon. In order to make way for the restoration of solid learning, it is necessary to expunge all terms that are contrived to give an air of wisdom to each author's imperfections of knowledge."

You like? He's actually talking about scurvy but, gosh, it's exactly what someone needs to say to current academics in the education field.
