HK7s - 2008 - News From Fiji

OK, I know our loss hurt us bigtime, but some people take it too far. Here's a story from a Fiji on-line newspaper:

Fiji’s 7 coach house stoned after Fiji’s loss

02 APRIL 2008 SUVA (Pacnews) ----- Fiji police are still hunting for people who stoned the Fiji 7s coach Josateki Savou's house in Naveiwakau, Valelevu on Sunday night.

A team led by the Crime Officer Valelevu went to Savou's house yesterday afternoon to see the extent of the damage.

Police believe that the offenders are from the same area and are following some leads.

The incident took place after Fiji lost to New Zealand by 34-nil in the semi-final of the Hong Kong 7s. No one received injuries during the incident.

Meanwhile, Fiji coach Josateki Savou has urged people to refrain from venting their anger on families and players, but hold him responsible for how the team has performed so far. The Digicel-sponsored side arrived in Adelaide yesterday amidst criticism after the 34-0 hiding at the hands of New Zealand at the Hong Kong Sevens on Sunday night. Some players' families have been verbally abused after the loss.

“I urge all not to get involve in doing that as we all have families,” Savou said. “If there is any finger pointing which needs to be done, I am to be blamed and not the players and their families.”

The defending champions of Adelaide are ready to put the disappointment from Hong Kong behind them and bring back lost glory.

“We would like to apologise to the people and the fans of Fiji,” Savou said.“The team needs the support and prayers.”

There is no injury concerns within the side as they held their first training run yesterday afternoon. Before departing Hong Kong, the team held an emergency meeting with players and management.

“We have looked at where we went wrong and what needs to be done to rectify it,” he said. Fiji is pooled with England, Kenya and France and faces a tough task. Savou said they would have to be on their toes from the first match.

“All teams have shown that they are improving and we can't take any team lightly,” Savou said.
