It's like Hu is now saying, that "China MUST develop Rule of Law!" and I can't applaud him enough for this realisation!
Mind you, this is cholera we're talking about! How shameful is that! Since cholera epidemics start from people at point zero "eating other people's poo", as Big Brother Gerald puts it, usually from sewerage getting into the water supply, it means that someplace called Annui in Mainland China must have truly shonky infrastructure, and since China normally has wonderful infrastructure, at least in regions where the Han live, I'm guessing that Annui is a region someplace where some minority group lives so the Han who run the country don't give a toss!
However, cholera epidemics are one of those things that explain to the world exactly WHY you should care, and very deeply too, that everyone everywhere, even if they are minority groups, should be given a damn fine infrastructure.
Disease knows no boundaries!
I remember years ago, back when I was a history teacher, Bubonic Plague broke out somewhere in North India and WHO was in there instantly and quarantined the area and, in consequence, only 13 people died ... and all my hideous history students were all instantly "Awwww!" and talking about how they were longing to see The Black Death in action and millions killed and were all cross with WHO for preventing it. Naturally, I'm furious and saying "Don't you realise that if this "Black Death" wasn't stopped that way, it would have quickly involved YOU! Like YOU PERSONALLY!" but they didn't get it!
However, people the world over are like ridiculous teenagers in that they don't appear to get it! And it's so simple too: No matter where and who is at point zero, disease spreads like wildfire away from source and goes everyplace! Disease is not just about THEM because, by the very nature of epidemics, it's very quickly and suddenly about US!!! I mean, just look at how far and how fast SARS spread!
But anyway, that isn't my choice for this week. This week, I'll have to hand the prize to the President in the Philippines, Benigno "Grinning Loon" Aquino!
I simply cannot believe what a fool this man is! I mean, just look at the latest: Hong Kong was very angry about the screw-ups in Manila that resulted in the deaths of eight HK tourists, right?, and then even angrier with how the Philippines instantly began to lie to us as their very first response, so naturally Feisty HK went all out with the protest marches and prayer vigils, until the Philippines got the message and HK got what it wanted, which was HK police involved in the inquiry into what really happened within the Manilla hostage incident so we could be ensured full and honest disclosure.
So it should be over, right? All this animosity and bad-blood business should be finished, right? And because this is the case at our end, Our Donald, Hong Kong's Head Honcho - never a fool and very well trained in always doing the right thing - did the right thing here by acknowledging the end of the impasse with a pleasant personal letter to "Grinning Loon" thanking him for permitting our police in as observers.
See anything wrong with that? No? All right and fitting, OK!
Not so! Grinning Loon immediately goes whinging off to Mainland China that Our Donald had insulted him and demanding China deal with him!
Like, say what?
OK, tittle-tatting to China this way is such a slap in the face because it's making out that China is the Big Boss of us, which may be true, but nonetheless is an attack on our Sovereignty (We have The Basic Law - which China signed, I should add - that gives us separate rule and keeps China out of our business for 50 years - although China doesn't always abide by this signed agreement - so go, Hu, with your "China must develop Rule of Law" sentiment!) however it goes much deeper than that because of the level of abject stupidity involved.
Seems Aquino took umbridge at how Our Donald signed off; the final line that went something like "And I'm sure the inquiry will proceed with intelligence and vigour so we all know the truth of what really happened."
No, wait! Let me see if I can find exactly what it said. Ah, got it: "Naturally, I'm hoping it will be an independent, professional and comprehensive investigation."
It's simply a throw-away closing line, right?, as anyone with the smallest grasp of the fine art of polite letter-writing would instantly realise ... but not the Grinning Loon, who gave a press interview saying - and this is an exact quote - "We are told, in very minute detail, what we are supposed to do. In my view that is very insulting, so I conveyed to the People's Republic of China that sending that letter to me was not right. I did not like the tone." before going on to say that such a letter "in other situations, would even provoke a war."
Honestly! No, seriously!! Oh, and the other little comment was about how People's Republic of China didn't send such a letter. Only Hong Kong did!
Well, of course only HK did; China knows to keep out of this because, legally, it isn't China's business! This is HK business only to be handled by HK.
Honestly! How can a President of one country not know even something so basic about another country? Or how can any country, realising they have a fool for a President, not surround him with wise and well-informed advisers so the rest of the world doesn't realise they have a fool for President? I mean, they did it with Nixon during his final year of Presidency after his massive flipout nervous breakdown that turned him into such a gibbering idiot ... so why aren't they doing it with this Grinning Loon!
So that's definitely my choice for this week:
THREATDOWN
Stupid little men with great big egos,
who don't even know that they don't know
and make a big issue out of it!
or even better:
Having a new leader that makes even that corrupt
nasty vicious Gloria "Piece of Slime" Arroyo
look like a Great Statesman!
Oh, and here's the latest piece of news: Aquino is sending his Vice President to HK on a state visit to meet Our Donald in order to make amends and to calm things over between the two countries. Normally, sending your underling on such a mission this would be a MASSIVE insult ... except, as Our Beth tells us, the Vice President is actually very clever and is the right person to do this, maybe not on a political level but definitely, definitely, definitely on a real-life level.
